The parade commemorates a vital Mexican holiday, when Mexico declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1810. The occasion was marked by the “Cry of Freedom” -- or “El Grito” -- by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Today there is much dispute over what the actual cry was, but the story is commemorated each year when the Mexican president stands on his balcony in Mexico City, rings the ceremonial bell, and shouts, “Mexicanos, Viva Mexico!” This cry of freedom is repeated by the crowd. This tradition, carried out on September 15, marks the beginning of the celebrations which last for the next twenty- four hours. The cry is then repeated throughout all Mexican cities by local governors. The celebrations take place in all cities where Mexicans live, especially here in New York.
The Madison Ave parade was a shining example of such festivities. Floats, costumes, and music saturated the streets and the crowds responded with great enthusiam. Health Plus was there, marching to support the Mexican people of New York City, and, in addition, awarded scholarships to several deserving students.
“We are very happy to come out for this event,” said Ada Rodriguez, Chief Marketing Officer for Health Plus. “Mexican- Americans are a big part of the community we serve. We take pride in their pride, and celebrate their celebration.”
