“I’ve been part of this event for many years now, and year after year, I never get tired of it. It’s always exhilarating to see the enthusiasm of these children as they participate in a friendly competition of baseball,” says Ms. Rodriguez. “Joining a little league is a great way for children to stay active and healthy during the summer -- and a great opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork, too.”
Along with Rodriguez, Roberto Clemente Jr., son of baseball legend Roberto Clemente (to whom the competition is dedicated), made a guest appearance, signing autographs for the children on their Health Plus-embroidered baseball caps. For all 98 participating teams consisting of 4,000 children from all parts of the city, this year’s competition will prove to be arduous, as each team competes to bring home the coveted Roberto Clemente Cup at summer’s end.
The Little League is an event that Health Plus takes part in each year in an effort to promote physical wellness in the communities the healthcare company serves. The program is free for boys and girls, from the ages of 5 to 12, and for boys only, from the age of 13 to 15. Each year, the program enrolls over 1,000 children throughout the five boroughs.
Young players surround Roberto Clemente Jr., son of the legendary Robert Clemente, to get their Health Plus little league caps signed at the opening of Health Plus’s citywide Little League tournament.
Daniel Ostolaza, Luis Ramos, and Ada Rodriguez from Health Plus, along with Sunset Park Recreational Center’s Christian Suarez (second from left) and Al Quesada (far right), join Roberto Clemente Jr. and the little league teams.
