Brooklyn, New York - May 4, 2007 — This past weekend, Brooklyn-based managed care organization Health Plus took its show on the road, traveling to Albany for the 20th annual Somos El Futuro (We are the Future) -- a legislative conference held each year by the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, whose mission is to create opportunities that increase the participation of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic community in the public policy making process and build the capacity of New York's Hispanic communities to work towards the development of policies, laws, state rules and regulations that address the needs and issues of Hispanics across the state.

The theme of this year’s conference was progress and the voyage that has led this organization to reach its 20-year anniversary.  “The Voyage from Somos Uno......to Somos El Futuro.,” was the slogan of the weekend. Banners and posters everywhere at Albany’s Crowne Plaza Hotel’s convention center proclaimed this message, along with pictures of Latino politicians who served from 1987 and from 2007, demonstrating how their numbers among the New York State Assembly and the State Senate have both doubled in these past twenty years.

Somos El Futuro seeks partnerships with various organizations, both private and not-for-profit, and as it has been for many years, Health Plus was a proud sponsor of the three-day extravaganza.  In addition to sponsoring the conference and several of its events, Health Plus presented scholarships to a number of students during the Student Recognition Dinner.

Another highlight from the event was the Community Service Awards ceremony, presented by Progress, Inc., to recognize the efforts of organizations and individuals based in Latino communities that benefit the great Latino community of New York State.  Health Plus Chief Marketing Officer Ada Rodriguez was honored with one of these prestigious awards for all the hard work that Health Plus continues to do, promoting healthy living through proper healthcare.

“We’re very proud to be a part of Somos El Futuro,” said Tom Early, Executive Director of Health Plus, “not only as a sponsor, but as a representative of the communities we serve.  Supporting this conference helps to support the people we care about, and the people who care about us.”

Health Plus Chief Marketing Officer Ada Rodriguez proudly displays her Community Service Award, as she stands with Juan D. Martinez and other members of Progress, Inc., who presented her with the honor at the 20th Annual Somos El Futuro Conference.
